1993 dakota transmission

i bought a 93 dokota recently and the guy i got it from had the engine rebuilt and didnt do anything to the trans and soon after the trans went out and he tried putting one in it out of either 96 or 97 or maybe newer so it only has 2 gears 2nd and 3rd because he couldnt figure out how to hook all the extra wires on new one which makes it run bad because of the broken circiuts.. so my question is, is there any way of making this trans work in the truck because i cant find an original anywhere around
