Have your fuel injectors checked out, that's where I'd start first. If you have to push the gas you're basically trying to dump fuel into your cylinders, which obviously is working, but your injectors could be dirty, clogged, or not shooting out the fuel in the correct pattern. Try running some fuel injector cleaner, which I wouldn't personally do normally, just because that stuff actually can hurt your system, but seeing as you're already having a major problem with starting the car, it won't hurt to do that to find out if the injectors are really the problem.

Injectors for sure, and let me know if that works for you.

The "gas" pedal does not really dump gasoline into the cylinders. It opens the throttle plate and allows air to enter the intake. I'm going to guess there's a vacuum leak in the manifold or the IAC is dirty. The MAF sensor thinks there is only a little air getting past the throttle body, when in fact there is unaccounted air going to the cylinders. The MAF will tell the injectors to deliver an amount of fuel proportional to the air it sees, so what you are doing when you push the accelerator is letting more air and hence more fuel into the cylinders.

Try removing and cleaning the IAC (idle air control) solenoid valve on the throttle body. Also clean the throttle body thoroughly to remove carbon deposits. If the IAC does not function properly or is dirty it is not letting enough air past the throttle plate for normal engine idling.

There is a small nipple with a rubber cap at the back left of the intake cover. Attach a vacuum tester and start the car to check that the vacuum is high enough. If there is a vacuum leak in the intake manifold, you can sometimes find it by spraying ether (starting fluid) along various gasketed surfaces and the engine speed picks up if the ether gets pulled into the leak.

Good luck
