Starting problem. Please help

Frustrating. 2001 cavalier 2.2. Car started fine last night. Today got up no start. Turns over great but wont fire up. Couldnt hear the pump turning on. Someone said theres a valve on fuel rail to check to see if its getting fuel but I cant find it. But the car ran great even last night all a sudden nothing. Dont make sense.

As far as checking fuel pressure, there may not be a schrader valve. You may have to to tee the gage into supply line, to check pressure. You could take the fuel pump connector loose and check voltage and ground at the proper terminals. If you have good voltage and ground for the pump motor and no pump action, suspect the pump. How long since the fuel filter was changed? Don't take any fuel lines loose without being sure there is no pressure on the system.

Re: Starting problem. Please help

Its been about 2 years since I replaced the filter. But would that cause no sound from the pump? Actually on this car I dont ever remember hearing the pump. I just checked the spark. Getting good spark. Goota be the fuel somehow. Cant smell no fuel from under the hood. But to start fine at midnight and 8am no start. Thats what got moe. The dealer said they give no warning before going out if its the pump.

At the fuel pump connector, gray wire is voltage for fuel pump motor, engine cranking. The fuel injectors get voltage from the same circuit, I can rule out an injector issue?

Well first check the fule pump relay, i have seen them go bad. If you change that and it dont kick on after you hit the key, put a fule pump in it. I would not be waisting my time checking injectors ect if you dont hear the pump. I would assume you have checked the pump fues as well but i better put that out their as well.

Re: Starting problem. Please help

If the problem isn't fuel: ie: Fuel pressure good, injectors are clicking...

I'd suspect the ignition module - will crank all day but never fire. When they die - they just simply stop working... no warning.

O yeah,,, one other trick,,,,
IF you can't hear the fuel pump - get your leg under the passenger side there and give the gas tank a kick. Will sometimes jar the pump back to working.... lol

Re: Starting problem. Please help

Car will start for 2-3 seconds when key is on and 9 volts is measured at the injector plug.Car will then die out. And I get 1 -4 volts now measuring at the injector plugs. And of course it won't start again. I get no pulse at injector wire. I also ohmed out the injectors and they were at about 13 ohms.
I have been changing out parts from a running 2000 2.2 sunfire with this cavalier. The parts I have changed (trying to find this issue) is as follows:
Fuel pump, crank sensor, ignition module, map sensor, throttle sensor,ABS module and the air intake sensor.
I did get the car to run for about 2 hours and then same thing all over again. But it does seems to have gotten worse. I also hooked it up to a scanner and it read no OBD2 codes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have been working on this*** blessed car for 3 weeks. And at wits end with it. THANK YOU!!!

Thia may HOPEFULLy HELP YOU!!!CHECK ALL!
Now I can tell you too check the security system!!!!! The passcode on it. I posted this on another forum and still have gotten NO where! I do believe the security could be a issue for you. This sounds all famialir to me. And after 2 months I am ready to trash the car!! Good luck to the both of us!! Dont get frustrated like I am!

Re: Starting problem. Please help

Ok,

I'm just thinking this through here.

What will turn the injectors off - the PCM. Could be faulty BUT...

This does sound like a electrical short...

What tells the PCM/Computer that the car is running in the first place? Crank/Cam sensors I believe - check the harness for breaks.
I know my truck uses a second oil pressure sending unit for this purpose. If this goes, computer thinks engine is off and shuts down everything... not sure if yours has that one...
