Re: 1999 olds silhouette alternator removal

In front there is a cross bolt - remove this. In back of the alternator at an angle are two bolts 15mm socket. This will drop the alternator. The bracket that holds the alternator has one bolt into the block with the engine lift bracket also 15mm. On the left side of the engine are three bolts that hold an aluminum bracket. Remove the spring loaded idler, the static idler and those three bolts. The bracket will come off. Those back bolts are a real pain. You have to reach from the left side under then up near the firewall. Once you break them loose you can remove them with your fingers.

Re: 1999 olds silhouette alternator removal

I have gotten to the removal point above: removed the 3 bolts that hold the alternator in place; removed the idler pulleys and the bracket that holds them--still can't get the alternator passed the top of the engine. Definately see no way to drop it out from below. Do I need to remove the wiper motor also to get it out by the left side (front) of the engine?

Done this before , you have to undo the whole sub frame and lower it about five inches to get the alternater over the top of the engine.Or you can take the upper intake off and coil packs off , also dissconect the wiper bars to make it easy'er

Whoa! You don't want to remove those subframe bolts unless you plan to do major work.
Those should be replaced once removed unless you know they are not too old.
Anyway, the engine is designed to be rolled forward for maintenance. This is how you change the rear spark plugs as well.

Remove the two front engine brackets that attach to the top of the radiator support; leave the bracket on the body, just pull out the two bolts that attach the engine to the mounts.

Install a ratchet strap running from the driver's side engine lift point forward and down past the radiator back and under the engine and hook it to the frame. You need to route the strap inside the bumper so you don't damage any plastic parts with the strap. While you're under the car, loosen the bottom engine mount screw a few turns--its under the engine near the harmonic balancer. Use the ratchet strap to pull the engine forward until it hits the bracket on top of the radiator. You will now have plenty of room back there to lift the alternator out of the car.
I've just hooked the ratchet strap from the engine over to my truck in the driveway before to pull the engine forward. The engine will roll forward to provide more than enough room to pull the alternator.
