99 Grand Cherokee Stutters while driving....

Hi, new to the forum so thought id see what I can get....Whenerever i start my car the rpms shoot up between 1 and 2 grand and slowly steady out but you can feel the car slowly rev up.... You put it in gear and try to drive off and it sputters or jerks real hard and will continue doing it going down the road. Ive had the AIC replaced as well as fuel filter and new sparkplugs and a few months ago the TPS. . Any Ideas because im not sure my mechanics even have any left....

Re: 99 Grand Cherokee Stutters while driving....

120000 miles and the transmission im not sure what you mean... its automatic 4x4/overdrive and was rebuilt probably 10000 miles ago. I replaced the TPS again and it seemed to fix the problem for about an hour and then started jerking real hard in idle and when i went to accelerate the whole car shook and it tryed to stall out i believe as i limped it all the way home. The check engine light is on but it seems like im wasting my time going to the shop anymore as its been there at least ten times the last two weeks and im completely out of ideas....

Apologies about the transmission, I spend a lot of time on the Cherokee forum. Have you ever replaced the cps (crankshaft position sensor)?

Re: 99 Grand Cherokee Stutters while driving....

Actually just this past week it was replaced as well... so that makes 1 cps, 2 tps, all spark plugs, and fuel filter and still no success. I was skeptical with the change as the guy was having problems getting the cps plug to fit and im afraid he may have bent a prong but he swears he didnt so ive been told it could be the whole computer or fuel filter or catalytic converter but I dont know anymore.

Re: 99 Grand Cherokee Stutters while driving....

Just got back from the shop again and left it this time for him to really look into it. He hooks the computer up and it throws a cam sensor but tells me its running in sync so its not acting up. I told him after i replaced the tps it ran fine till it heated up and then it would start to jerk while idleing and when you tried to drive after that it was a nonstop sputter and would barely move if you gave it gas but runs fine again after you let it sit and cool off.... He looked dumbfounded so i dont know what to think.

Re: 99 Grand Cherokee Stutters while driving....

Since the problem shows up once it's warm it could be in the electronics, where there's I think a warmup circuit and a normal circuit.

But...one other thing that comes to mind. Does your Jeep use any coolant? Reason I ask is that on 99 and 00 4.0 liters, they used substandard heads which crack after 90k miles or so. Look for the stamped head number underneath the intake/exhaust manifolds. If it's "0331" and/or you're losing coolant, the head could be your problem (rough running caused by coolant getting into the cylinders). Solution is a '98 or earlier head from a junkyard.

have they replaced the cam sensor, also look on the rear of the valve cover and inspect the wiring harness, they sometimes rub against the studs

Smittie, it's always best to start a new thread when asking a question.

But that said, they have a great tire size comparison tool here, it should tell you what you want to know.
