94 JGC A/C problem, ice on liquid line
This has been going on for years, on really bad days I just keep throwing in cans of refrigerant. Pep Boys tells me the system is not showing any signs of leak, and pressure is holding. On a full charge it blows cold for a few days. Then it starts to blow hot again, and once it starts blowing warm, the liquid line (low end) starts to freeze from the condenser to where it enters into vehicle, I'm assuming the evaporator is on the other side under the dash. Once this happens, all I can do is release some of the refrigerant from the liquid line and put another can in. and then it starts to blow cold again.
Last summer I replaced the compressor, 2 years ago I replaced the condenser, I think that's what it was, it sits in the front of the Radiator. The Dryer is only about 5 years old, but I didn't replace it after the compressor blew, I was told I should have. So just wanted to throw that out there in case it could be the cause of the problem. I did play around once with the screw on the sensor that sits on the dryer, so I don't know if that's set properly anymore, but that just seems to regulate the pressure to tell the compressor when to turn on and off.
Obviously I must be losing refrigerant somewhere, but why would the liquid line freeze? it's as if something is keeping the refrigerant from circulating through the evaporator and back. The Hot side of the hose off the compressor is hot, the cold side is just room temp.
So, It doesn't seem to be a circulation problem cause if I put in more refrigerant, it works for a few days. But, once it stop blowing cold the liquid line will start to freeze, so there's obviously still refrigerant in the system.
