Emissions and egr valve

I should know the answer to this but I don't; does anyone out there know where the EGR valve is located on a 92 Toronado trofeo 3.8L. auto.

I looked and looked and did not see it. I have learned it does not have the typical look of an EGR valve that I am used to but, either way I cannot seem to locate it.

I wanted to test it, (if possible) as my car did not pass my state emissions test - The NO reading was WAAAAAAAAAAAy too high. HC and C0 were fine.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Emissions and egr valve

If it had the electric EGR has three solenoids with a connector in the center. I think its near the distributor on the drivers side of the engine. It's been a long time since I have seen one of those let alone work on one.

Re: Emissions and egr valve

Maxwedge - Thanks for the link/pic...that is a really good image - however I do not see that anywhere in the engine compartment. I had a friend look under the hood as well and he could not find it either!

Does anyone out there know if maybe my car/model just does not have one?

Car is not showing any codes with the onboard diagnostics.

All lines and ports seem to be in use and there is nothing erroneously plugged.

Re: Emissions and egr valve

92 may not set a egr codes, I don't remember whether the l engine had an egr, try googling 92 olds egr see what you find. Usually nox is a result of an inop or clogged egr or very hot running engine, or a bad cat.

Re: Emissions and egr valve

cat is after market - more time on it than mileage...probably only 25k miles on it.
...Usually nox is a result of an inop or clogged egr...That's why I was trying to find it/inspect it/fix it/replace it...

I will be changing the thermostat, o2 sens, air filt, and pcv valve before I go for e-check again...also ran a 'guarantee to pass' emissions cleaner through the tank.
I am beginning to think this card does not have one...But there has to be one on a 92 right! It has to have either a tube or hose(?) going from either the intake or an exhaust manifold right! AAAARrrrrrgh!

Re: Emissions and egr valve

I just spoke to a great parts counter at a dealership and they took my vin and called GM and according to them, gm states this car does not have a egr. I don't know why or if i believe it, (since its a 92??) so I am still going to look at the different areas under the hood again...

Re: Emissions and egr valve

Some '92 3.8L did not have a EGR valve. GM decided it was not required to meet that years emissions standards.

Re: Emissions and egr valve

Well 3rd time was a charm. The additive to the tank did not work (failure 2); I'm not surprised, but it was the cheapest possible fix to try first. So of course after that I had the cat converter replaced; and then it passed. I guess they don't make aftermarket converters like they used to, (or at least not even close to a factory converter).

Everyone, Thanks for all of the help!

The EGR is not your problem! You may be better off starting a new thread with a better description of your symptom.
