Steering Column Loose

The steering column in my 89 Olds is getting loose. It has the tilt option. What I'm wondering is....if I don't fix it, can it eventually come apart so that it can't be driven, or be unsafe to drive?

It will not come apart but will became dangerous, fix it, plenty of how to info out there.
