Cruise Control not working 98 Silhouette
Hi from a new poster,
I recently acquired a 98 Silhouette that seems to be in overall fair condition and I'm trying to begin to whittle away at some of the items that are not working properly. The cruise control is does not work or respond in any way. I've read around on the net to discover this may be associated with the TCS. I'm not exactly sure what that is, but my TCS button never lights up regardless of position. Can anyone offer assistance with trouble shooting this cc issue? Thanks in advance... |

Re: Cruise Control not working 98 Silhouette
Welcome to AF!
The problem might be related to your rear lights,( are all of your rear lights working?) The board that the lights go into shorts out due to water infiltrating it and then causes other electrical issues. Take a look at your boards to see if they are melted anywhere or show signs of charring, a black residue. My cruise control stopped working as well as my TCS (Traction Control System) light stayed on all the time. Replacing the boards ( can be purchased on eBay usually for under $30/pr) rectified the problem in my vehicle. The cruise began working again, and the TCS/ABS lights went off. When you go to install the new boards (if that needs to be done, if that's what you discover the problem to be,) make sure you apply a good weathertight sealer on the outside of the board to keep any additional water out and prevent further issues from cropping up.

Thanks for the tip! I'll start there. Are the boards behind each taillight?

Re: Cruise Control not working 98 Silhouette
Ok, I removed both tail lights and dissassembled them. They looked great, no corrosion or signs of moisture entry at all. I reassembled them and then checked the lights to make sure they were all working and I remembered that the backup lights were not working before, and they are still not. So...
Any other suggestions on the cruise and 2) I suppose there is a switch on the tranny or gear shift system to activate the back up lights. Thoughts? |

Re: Cruise Control not working 98 Silhouette
Did you set any codes? A couple years back while driving down the freeway the van suddenly dropped out of Cruse, no MIL light, and the Cruse would not reengage. At the next stop the transmission would not shift down into 1st, even manually. I found that the 1st-2nd solenoid had failed and set a silent code, for some reason it also disabled the Cruse Control, when the solenoid was replaced the cruse began to work again.
Also check the CC assembly, I noticed that the electrical connector on mine was loose, check it for tightness and moisture. Also after 220,000 miles my accelerator cable recently gave up, it could be that the CC cable has failed and is not moving the throttle. Since there is no indication when the CC is engaged, it could be working and not controlling the throttle. Good Luck. 94 |

Re: Cruise Control not working 98 Silhouette
On mine I found the throttle wire was at fault. It has a plastic connector, right at the throttle, that melted on a long trip. And became disconnected.
