Lound Humming sound from rear..

I am getting a loud humming sound from my 2001 Buick Regal. It sounds like it is coming some place from the rear but I can't tell. Seems like the faster I go the louder the sound becomes.

I put a new muffler on , new tires , new right rt front wheel bearing sound is still there.

Can anybody give me a idea to look for?
How do I tell if the back wheel bearing are bad?

Re: Lound Humming sound from rear..

Sounds very much like a main wheel bearing.("The faster you go", is my clue) Have a mechanic test drive it. With front bearings the sound gets less on a sharp yanking of the steering wheel. If you're a DIY, http://www.rockauto.com has great prices,or Ebay.

Another possibility is the fuel pump, but slim.

Good luck.

Thank you for the information. This is new to me so I have a question about this main wheel bearing. Is there one for each wheel or is there just one main one for the rear?

Re: Lound Humming sound from rear..

There is one bearing for each wheel both front and back.(the thing your wheel bolts are attached to IS the bearing). Just finished my front left bearing today.
You will need a 32 MM socket for the center axle nut and a bearing puller which you can usually rent/loan from Autozone or suchlike, and a torx socket to take off the caliper.

If you are serious about doing it I can write up a walkthro' for you,or check Autozone for similar.

Hope my pic of bearing uploads

Re: Lound Humming sound from rear..

It's your/my lucky day ! I just found an old thread with the complete walkthro' and pics here:

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=668487

Should make the job way easier. Contact me if you run into problems.Only caution i would make is get the mid range priced bearing, cheapies tend to wear out faster.

Good luck
