Four wheel drive clunk

Hello, I just bought a truck and I'm wondering at my sanity over it. Its a 1997 Checerolet Silverado CK2500. The problem is that it clunks when I put it in four wheel drive, only then. It made the noise when I bought it, my husband said it was loud but it worked and it was fine I don't believe he's right, I've never had a truck make that noise before. Anyone know whats going on? Thanks

Re: Four wheel drive clunk

I want to add that the clunk is really loud, its enough to make a person jump and look around. I've asked my sis about her trucks (there all automatic and push button like mine), she has never heard anything like that either. I was told its because the truck is so big and heavy duty, I think hubby is full of something

Does it just clunk when you put it in 4W or after you are using 4W or going from park to drive or reverse?

Re: Four wheel drive clunk

It clunks when I put it into four wheel drive and I was just told that when its in four wheel drive and put the truck in reverse it clunks(didn't know that). The second clunk is not as loud as the first, I havn't heard it, just going off of what he told me. He was putting the horse trailer away when he had it in reverse and in four wheel drive. I have a hunch this is a common problem. Thanks

MT2500

Where is the slip joints located? He can find it if he's pointed in the right direction. Thanks

On the 2 piece drive shaft setup it is the couple in between them will have splines in it.

Re: Four wheel drive clunk

Thanks for the help, but I think its going to have to go to the mechanic in time. He tells me theres nothing wrong with the parts that he looked at. Then he told me he put it in four wheel drive several times and the clunk got quieter. He seems to think it will work itself out with use. As you can tell I think he doesn't know what he's talking about, if only he would own up to it. When things quiet down I will just sneek it off to the mechanic one day and I'll deal with him later about it. Its not the first time. LOL!!

Thanks for the help!

I've been following this issue you have ...It appears the person inspecting this U joint issue has no knowledge of whats going on/how to check ..

with the wheels off the ground and the axles being rotated by HAND you check for any play or looseness in the drive shafts all...including the area where it comes out of the transfercase / differentials ...

with the vehicle on the ground this is impossible to check !

Re: Four wheel drive clunk

That could have been part of the problem! I grin and bear it, and get things fixed when need be, behind his back. Saves his pride and my temper with him. He does fix alot of things with the vehicles, but I think this is out of his reach even though he wont admit it. Are most husbands this way?

Re: Four wheel drive clunk

i do give him credit, he does try and he does a good job at what he does know. He will probably ask friends and his father for advice. They are all do-it-yourself mechanics, hopefully he won't try to jump in without knowing whats going on or whithout help. In time, if its not fixed, I will take it in and get it worked on. I don't like something thats broken, thankfully we won't drive it often and the four wheel drive will seldom be used.

Thanks
