01 Cavalier won't turn over - will start (run)

The car won't turn over. I turn the key on and all the idiot lights come on and everything works but the car won't turn over. I can start it with my remote starter (sometimes) and my cousin has run a push button and mounted it under my dash so I can start the car. I turn the key to on and press the button. Car starts right up. Any ideas? I was trying to avoid replacing the ignition switch just because I don't want 2 keys for the car, but if that is the problem then I will replace it.

Thanks
Jessica

Re: 01 Cavalier won't turn over - will start (run)

I just ran out and tried that and no it didn't start. My remote starter won't start it either now. Not sure what happened there. It was working on Saturday to start it. Now I have to rely on that push button, which does still work. When I turn the key all the way over like I would to start it everything turns off except the check engine light and the theft system light. I thought that was normal though. I know the starter takes a lot of juice to turn so I would have thought everything else lost power so that the starter was getting all the power it needed. But maybe not. Any other ideas? I really don't wanna pay the people that put my remote starter in to trouble shoot this if I don't have to. Could it be my remote starter causing the problem?

Make sure before you replace the ignition switch that is whats wrong. My 94 cavalier switch cost just under 200.00 to replace. That does not include the laber.

Thank God my ignition switch only costs $40.00. My mechanic said it's a pain in the a$$ to install because of the air bag but if I want him to do it he will. He said it will pass inspection like that. Now I have other problems. I Trac Off light and Check Engine that I had on before.

sounds like it could be the anti theft system. the remote start and the push button that was installed by-passes it.

Re: 01 Cavalier won't turn over - will start (run)

The car has been starting sporadically. Like this morning it turned over fine but when I got to work and shut it off it wouldn't turn over again and I had to start it with the push button. I have found that if I grab this one cluster of wires and jerk it around the ignition works. So I am thinking that I just have to get to these wires and find out which ones are no good and replace them. Then maybe my car will go back to normal. Got till the end of July to get it inspected. Crossing my fingers and knocking on wood. Send me lots of good karma and good luck. I'm gonna need it.
