99 escort no gears (torque converter?)

have a 99 escort automatic that we replaced the transmission about 2 years ago. symptoms now are no movement at all. when it idles and if put in any gear NOTHING happens. no engine decrease or anything.no forward gears no reverse.
pulled the transmission pan to check internal linkage to shifter and it appears ok.
could this possibly be the torque converter?

any ideas what to do next?

thanks

It could be the torque converter as you say. It also could be that the pump isn't supplying enough pressure to engage the clutch packs. It could be a bad control valve. It could be that the shift linkage has broken, but you have checked that. just for the record, it could be low fluild level, but you've checked that.

Re: 99 escort no gears (torque converter?)

Pretty much the same thing happend to me, replaced the whole tranny with another used one.. But upon trying it out, it worked fine, except a noise that sounds like baseball cards in bicycle spokes whenever I accelerate uphill. Any suggestions on the cause and a cure?

That kind of noise would be made if the air inlet system didnt have all of the parts attached. Unless you are certain it is being made from the transmission, I would suspect some part of the air filter housing is not reconnected, or the 'muffling' baffles that bring air into the air filter housing is gone. These parts dont do anything other than prevent you hearing the really significant sucking sound the intake manifold produces.

I'll check that out, I know we had to disconnect a lot of the assembly to get to the top of the tranny. I'll let you know if I find the problem...Many thanks for your response and assistance!
