TV "kickdown" cable adjustment

I heard thats its pretty easy for the average joe to adjust this correctly, is this true? Since i've been swapping my carb around i need it re-adjusted correctly so i don't screw up my trans.

I'm feeling kinda lazy tonight so I will just hot-link you a post I made in the Monte Carlo forum some years ago, pertaining to the subject:

Re: TV "kickdown" cable adjustment

Thanks again Silicon...i probably shoulda searched before i posted though..seeing how this definitely would have been asked before lol. But one question, am i allowed to tweak it after i adjust it this way for harder or softer shifts? Its just before i did the engine swap, my father didn't like how my transmission "shifts too early"...but IMO i like it, better MPG!

Re: TV "kickdown" cable adjustment

Yes, you can 'dial it in' but remember, shift points on the TH700R4 in normal driving should be around 15mph for the 1-2, 25mph for the 2-3 and 35-40mph for the 3-4.

If it's all in 3rd before 20MPH, it's 'stack shifting' and will need to be 'tightened' by moving the cable toward the firewall a notch or two.

Re: TV "kickdown" cable adjustment

also i dont get it, when i tried adjusting mine where you press that "D" tab and open the throttle all the way so you hear it click (towards the carb), the trans shifts all weird. i now have the cable adjusted all the way back toward the firewall and there is when it shifts fine...

Re: TV "kickdown" cable adjustment

I was having issues adjusting my TV cable a while ago also. I went thru the
procedure many times but still had late hard shifts on my 200R4. Finally the
plastic end on the TV cable broke where it attaches to the carb.
After replacing the TV cable with a new one and following the adjustment procedure, the trans now shifts perfectly, the way it should.

I think the plunger in the old cable was not working properly causing the cable not to adjust properly.

Just my

A 2004r cable works in a 700R4 and vice versa - I know, I've done it.

My thinking might be more in line with the TV valve spring in the transmission possibly not being any good - http://www.tvmadeez.com/article/index.php is an article about how the TV system works and what can go wrong with it. It's a good read.

how about the 350 tranny ever try that one ...?
I had this happen on a tranny swap..also the connection to the tranny can be improper ..could be hooked up wrong on the carb end ..

No, jcat, I've never been stupid enough to try to use a TH350 detent cable as a TV cable on a 2004R or 700R4. I wouldn't mind hearing about your story more in-depth. I seriously doubt the OP is stupid as well, as his car came with a TH700R4.

If the cable worked on the old trans, it should work on this one as well. That there's a problem tells me the problem is in the TV valving in the transmission, see link above.

I never said you were stupid to do this ...I did this when installing a 350 tranny in place of the 200 tranny....used the on board vehicle detent cable ..didn't know the 350 cable was specific for the 350 ..was told by scrap yard there all the same ..found out 15 yrs ago there not...

why did I use the 200 tranny cable ???? because the scrap yard 350 tranny one , had this cable missing !

I have also seen these cables stick , bind up also ..then you have carb work done , and things get changed around ..I happens when auto repairers work on these older vehicles..

It happened to me, it took installing a new cable to find out that the old cable or the plunger was not working properly..
