turning up air/heat knob too high! 97 LS Regal

Hello, I have the manual controls for the air and heat in my car. 1997 Regal LS... I was just wondering why I have to crank them to 4th setting just for the air to blow? And the air comes out more cause of the high setting, which can heat up too fast in winter... It would be cool if the low setting worked.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks!

So of the 5 total blower speed positions which ones are not working? How about hi-speed position 5?

Based on the symptoms you may have a bad blower motor resistor.

The blower speed positions 1, 2, and 3 aren't working on the heat/cold.

How do you replace the blower motor resistor?

Thanks for the response!

Just remove the two or three fasteners that hold the kick panel on the passenger side under the dash. Remove kick panel. Then you will see the blower motor housing to the left. Remove the three 5.5mm bolts and drop the blower motor down. Undo the electrical connector from the resistor to the blower. With blower removed you will be the blower motor resistor. Undo and remove two forward retaining screws to the resistor assembly and loosen the rear since it is slotted. Remove and replace the resistor. Reverse procedure to install.

thanks Bob for your help and reply! Had time on the weekend to take it in, here's a picture of the old blower motor resistor, they looked fried!! Now I can have the fan on low speed and get good air/heat circulation...
