GTI vs. Mitsubishi ralliart

My brother is buying a car and has narrowed the list down to VW GTI and Mitsubishi ralliart (don't ask why this is the final list!). Which one would you suggest? I'm inclined towards the GTI because 1) manual transmission, 2) great reviews everywhere, 3) better suspensions, 4) I drove both and the GTI seemed like a smoother ride, 5) ralliart has too much acceleration and speed for my brother!, 6) better mileage.

I really like the ralliart because of 1) 0% financing, 2) the seats, 3) I've heard it has better maneuvering, esp. on rainy or snowy conditions, 4) Looks nicer than the GTI, 5) better cargo space.

What do you think? Price is almost the same after I consider the interest on the financing options.

Thank you. That was a very informative answer, one which will probably help countless others faced with the same question. Very detailed and balance assessment. Thank you.
