Re: 1989 F150 Starter Relay???

The starter relay, (sometimes incorrectly referred to as a solenoid) is located near the battery. The positive battery cable goes directly to one terminal, the cable on the other terminal goes down to the starter. The smaller terminal on the relay is what energizes the relay. Vintage Ford starters do not use a solenoid on the starter.

He's right, the one on the fender is what you are looking for. My 90 302 did have a solenoid on the starter, are you sure? when was the break point?

Solenoid - not only does it switch power too in the case of a starter solenoid, but the main function of it is mechanical power source, ie it moves the bendix of the starter into the flywheel in that application.

Relay - basically, a means of using small low amperage wires to electrically switch big large amperage wires, so you run the big current through the relay, not the switch and burn out the contacts...
all it is there fore is to "relay" power.
