2005 Impala 3.4L Brake Redesign

Whats the deal with the different designs for the front pads and rotors on the 2005 Impala's. I'm having a hard time finding rotors locally for the second design. Anyone know what this is all about? Can't find anything online about it. Second design is more expensive to for the pads and rotors.
