is the 1996 gs300 a 5 speed automatic for reals?

I was just wondering if anyone knows about the transmission, that the 1996 model gets a 5 speed automatic, is it just on the japanese ones? Also if they do come with a 5 speed, what's the difference? Does it make a huge difference? Cause I was thinking if it much different then why get a 95 when 96 will b way better. If anyone knows could u please give some advise? Thanks.
