Terrible Front End Noise

You guys have been great help in the past and I hope someone can shed light on this problem. I have a terrible noise in the front end of my 2002 Impala LS. I have had front brakes, rotors turned, new bearings, new tie rod ends, 4 new tires, front and read alignment. This noise is a crunching sound and seems to be rhymic with the slowing of the car when I brake. I have had this to 4 mechanics and not one can find a problem. Someone mentioned to me to have the harmonic balancer checked. Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: Terrible Front End Noise

A friend of mine had a noise similar to what you describe and the noise turned out to be the starter drive being worn and hitting the flywheel when slowing down, just a thought.

Re: Terrible Front End Noise

The engine is a 3800. I have now been told that I have two motor mount bolds broken off and need replaced. Could this cause the problem. I can actually feel a loseness in the brake pedal. I am at wits end with this car. Thanks for your input.

Re: Terrible Front End Noise

I am having a similar problem on my 03 3.8 impala ls. When I turn at low speeds I hear a crunching noisy come from the front end. I plan on looking in to it in the next few days. But you say you're noise is only when you are slowing down or stopping?

Re: Terrible Front End Noise

When I turn my wheels at a slow rate especially, I have a rubbing noise. when I brake I have the crunching nosie. I do think some of my problem is the motor mounts. But, there is definately an issue with my braking system.

Re: Terrible Front End Noise

mine is only when turning (not braking). If I find out that the noise is on my car I will let you know. Maybe it might help you solve you're problem.

Re: Terrible Front End Noise

I have what sounds to be a similar problem with my 2007 Impala LT V6. Please let me know what you find is the problem. I took mine to our local mechanic and he couldn't find anything.

Re: Terrible Front End Noise

The cv axel on the driver side was bad. I replaced it and no more noise.

Here go some pictures of the grease leaking out.

Re: Terrible Front End Noise

I currently have a similar problem. It seems to come from the front passenger side. If I am in drive, put my foot on the brake and tap the gas pedal, I hear a crunch sound on the high end and low end of the engine rev. Also when I put the car into drive from N or park it does seem to clunk. Is this motor mount related?

Welcome Leeman, I would check the CV Axels. That is what the issue was with my car. I took these pictures and they show the grease that leaked out of them... http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...56&postcount=5 .
Also I dont think it could be motor mount related, but then agian I have not really messed around with the motor mounts on my Impala or yet alone know much about them. I have removed both of the torque strut mounts several times to replace the radiator and fans several times, but It would not seem a crunching noise would come from that.
