04 Manual Transmission Problem Needing Help

I have a 04 cavalier 2.2 with 5sp. The car was grinding a little in the second when purhcased 2 years ago. It got worse over the years but only happened in 2nd. today I shifted out of 1st and into 2nd but nothing happened. Now it feels like the tranny has no gears. it appears all the linkage is good, can see it moving above the tranny. the fluid for clutch is good. i can move the shifter all over (all the way up from side to side and all the way down side to side) and fells like theres no gears at all. car can't be started without pushing in the clutch also. please help with this.
