tire shine = damage???

I took the car into the shop to have the tires rotated a while back. Guy asked if I used tire shine on the tires, which I do frequently to keep the new/black look . He informed me that tire shine products actually damage the tires because they pull the oils from inside the tires to the outside, giving the shiny/black look. He said that this could lead to premature tire wear, blowouts, etc. Seems like he could be correct because I've noticed that if I stop using tire shine products the tires look worse than had I not ever used them (they are more brown than black). Is there any truth to his statement? Either way I'm going to continue using tire shines simply because it keeps them looking better!!

The silicone in most tire dressing products actually seeps into the tire and can rot the rubber eventually, and not to mention damages the cars paint when it slings up from driving.

I found a tire shine that will not damage tires because it is waterbased and actually my tires stay shiny for over month. Tireific is the best tire shine that I've used in years and my tires continue to look great ( undamaged from silicone and oil based products ) and no sling back onto paint. I'll Tireific my tires about every 45 days or so, since it's a waterproof tireshine I can wash my car and it stays dry and shiny on my tires.

I have to second the silicone tire shine. I can't tell you how many spongy sidewalls I've seen due to that crap :\

Re: tire shine = damage???

wow, what an old thread! I still use the silicone tire shines (probably due for new tires soon anyway), What I've learned from both AF and from life experience about them is that you gotta spray them on then let them sit awhile before driving to prevent "sling off" and also I always clean my wheels afterward because it always gets on them, as well as the area on the car body nearest the wheels ...clean that too right after.

Re: tire shine = damage???

I have heard opposing views on Teflon based tire dressing. Some say its the best, while other say its an environmental hazard.
I don't like the mess but the shine is nice.
Is there one most would agree is the best?
