1991 Prizm only shifts out of park with shift lock override

Hello,

My 1991 Prizm (Auto Transmission) will not shift out of park unless I press the shift lock override. I can shift through the other gears just fine, but i have to press the override along with the shifter button when it's in park. I replaced the stop-light switch thinking that'd be the solution, but it didn't work.

Thanks for any help!

I am having the exact same problem with my Geo Prizm, and we cannot figure out what is wrong with it...Did you ever solve this problem?
Please get back to me,
Carrie

Yes! It was actually the brake light switch, which is located right next to the brake pedal. If you have cruise control, you need the 4 pin switch, otherwise you need the 2 pin, which was my problem. I hope that helps!
