New to cars, help me choose pls

I have lived in the city all my life and never thought i would need a
car.. well i ended up getting a job out of city so now i need to commute
to work. i figure i might as well get a car, make it look nice. so my
uncle kinda owns some dealership and he gave me a list of preowned
cars that he has on hand, and i choose some that interested me and were
cheap, those are just the listed price, i can get it for around 500-600 less.

Here are some of my choices:

Year Body Mileage Price Engine
99 EX Coupe 57,815 3,900 1.6L L4 PFI VTEC 16V
00 DX Hatchback 57,975 7,461 1.6L L4 PFI SOHC 16V
96 EX Coupe 68,071 5,876 1.6L L4 PFI VTEC 16V
97 DX Coupe 23,899 6,715 1.6L L4 PFI SOHC 16V

Question:
1) What's the difference between SOHC and VTEC?

2) Which one should I pick?

3) What happens to insurance when you modified your car? Do they
charge you more since its more likely you're gonna go faster?

can u guys help me out please? Thank you so much.

HUGE major difference between SOCH and Vtec. I wont go into details because i am tired. SOCH stands for Single Over Head Cam. The location of your camshaft. Your cam directly, basically, opens each of your valves, for SOHC it controls both exhaust and intake. For DOHC, DOHC stands for dual over head cam, there is a cam for the exhaust side of the valvetrain and a cam for the intake side. VTEC is the controlling of duration taht the valves are held open. Atleast i think thats right. I havent read much into it to get a better understanding than that but... there yo have it. one of your questions answered at the most basic scale.

All EX's civics have VTEC now, and all the cars you listed there are SOHC.

If I were YOU, I would go w/ the 96 or 99 coupe. I would take both to a reputable mechanic and see what minor tune-up work needs to be done on either car, if any. According to the mileage, the previous owner of the 96 coupe was driving about 11,345 miles per year and the previous owner of the 99 coupe was driving about 19,271 miles per year. Of course, you can't judge how bad/good of condition a car is based on mileage, it could be highway miles.

well since 2001lx answered the first questions, I guess I get the last two

I think you should pick the 99 EX, that's probably the nicest even though it is the cheapest.

And nothing has happend to my insurance since I've started modifying my car, they don't care too much.
