01 Silverado Engine cranks but will not run

While my son was driving the truck the engine died acted like it ran out of gas, the gas gauge does not work so he coasted into station put a few gallons in started the engine, it cranks and runs but dies down and will barely idle and will not pull at all.
  1. Towed truck home checked pcv not clogged has vacuum
  2. Has spark the engine will turn over and run
  3. Fuel pressure is less than 20psi with key on engine off, fuel pump can be heard when key is turned on. I don't know how to block off the return fuel line to check regulator fuel pressure
My question is how to check the regulator to make sure it isn't the fuel pump and can the MAF sensor be bad and cause low fuel pressure.
Thanks for any help

this is the typical fuel pump failure ,,,run out of gas no/poor fuel pressure causing no start ...

whenever the vehicle has less than 1/4 tank of fuel the pump is damaged..

need 53-60 psi ...key to on engine off ...should hold pressures for 15 min to within 3-5psi ....

testing proceedures are here , look thru this forum to get the full testing proceedure...

make sure you get the delphi fuel pump ....airtex and the others only last a few months..

hard to answer that as the parts being made change rapidly ...dephi pumps are the best performing ...problem is internet scamers are advertizing pumps as delphi but as we all know the chinese are masters at cloning everything , and illegally dumping defective products on U.S. ........

Yes AcDelco is Delphi.

Delphi makes the AC Delco fuel pumps for GM along with a lot of other electrical stuff.

But as J cat said lot of fake stuff out there and a lot of local parts places push the Junk Airtex pumps.

The MAF sensor does not affect fuel pump pressure.

The only true test on a fuel pump is to make sure it has good voltage and ground and over 1/4 tank of fuel and is putting out around 85 lbs or more of direct/full pressure at in line at fuel filter.
A quick test on full pressure regulator is to block return line.
Also on external regulators check the vacuum line for fuel in it.

What size engine do you have in it?

When checking fuel pump always run a fused 12 volt jumper wire to fuel pump feed wire.

Re: 01 Silverado Engine cranks but will not run

Bought AcDelco pump (GM#19153711) from dealer $335, pulled bed by myself using engine hoist took 4 hrs to complete job taking my time, pressure with old pump was less than 20, pressure with new pump is 54, truck runs fine now. Lesson learned is not to let broke kids drive the truck, they ran it out of gas too many times.

This is a great forum, Thanks for all the help.

thanks for posting back ...also your repair technic , is how I would do this ...checking pressures before restoring every thing is a smart way of doing this ..no surprises ...

KIDS... even if they had the cash for gas they will still run on low fuel ....I hope you got some cash from them for all your efforts ...I have been thru this myself too many times ...

GOOD LUCK .

Re: 01 Silverado Engine cranks but will not run

This is a good reminder to myself to not run the gas tank to empty.
