99 Camry 2.2 5sfe eng. troubles
Hi, I am a journeyman HD mechanic for 28 yrs. Have a 99 Camry 2.2 5sfe eng. Wife smelled something funny after driving on the highway the other day. All fluid levels OK. Could only find some oil leaking at back of eng. head onto intake runner tubes at #1 or #2 cyl. and possibly dripping onto the exhaust. Then noticed eng. a little louder than normal when idling. Took off valve cover cap and found lots of air pressure coming out! Compared it to our 94 Tercel and not much coming from it. Did WOT compression test to check for blown hd. gask. but all readings high and even across the board. Tested PCV and is working properly. Exhaust smoke is clean cold or hot and does not seem plugged. Can an EGR cause this? Also noticed coolant sys. pressured up very quickly while eng. was still cold. Still a possibility of a gallery in the head gask. causing this crankcase pressure ??
Thanks to anyone that can help me with this. G.

Re: 99 Camry 2.2 5sfe eng. troubles
That amount of blow-by is normal for that engine.

Yes, I am very familiar with that engine. They all do that, to the best of my knowledge.
