5.9 diesel push rod removal
I have to replace my gear housing due to the dowel coming out and causing damage to my gear housing. There are two bolts that hold the rocker lever pedestals. One appears to be a long head bolt and the other threads into the head.Would there be enough clearance to remove the push rods if the adjusting screws are backed all the way out and the valves are closed?I do not want to disturb the head bolts to avoid distorting the head gasket. Also would anyone know the torque spec for the timing pin mounting flange? Thanks

Re: 5.9 diesel push rod removal
I can't find a spec on the timing pin mount spec...I'd just put a dab of blue loctite on the threads and tighten them down good and snug.
As for the pushrods & such, I'd remove the headbolts that hold a rocker one at a time, put the rocker assembly and pushrods marked I and E in their own marked ziplock bag then reinstall the headbolt at 69 ft.lbs then go to the next one. Which method are you going to use holding the tappets up off the camshaft?

Re: 5.9 diesel push rod removal
I plan on using the dowel method of holding the tappet up to pull the cam out.

Re: 5.9 diesel push rod removal
I'd use that method too.
Are you using the Haynes #30041 manual?

Re: 5.9 diesel push rod removal
I am using a 1995 Dodge service manual, info that I have gotten from the internet and advice from a Cummins employee.

Re: 5.9 diesel push rod removal

Re: 5.9 diesel push rod removal
I've done some searching and found a 1/2" dowel with a 3/4 to 1" saw cut up one end lets it close just enough to fit the tappet and hold it while it's up off the camshaft.
The picture shows them about 3 inches longer than a stock pushrod and pairs held together with rubber bands to hold them up.
