Loud Thumb in the rear at low speeds

I hear a loud thumb when I go over bumbs at lower speeds. Never hear it it a high speeds. It comes from the back, but I am still trying to figure out which side. The shocks at less then two years old. I believe its a bushing going out (just guessing hear) but have no idea where to start on the issue. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

Re: Loud Thumb in the rear at low speeds

Do you know if new upper strut mounts were installed along with the sturuts? If not, it could be that the rubber in the mount has deteriorated to the point of separation. (See mount below) You also need to check the sway-bar mounts & end-links. In the future, please post the year & mileage of your car when posting, it helps us get a better idea of what issues you may have. Thanks

Re: Loud Thumb in the rear at low speeds

Sorry about the car details, it must have slipped.

2002 LeSabre Limited
120,000 miles

I did not replace the mounts when I replaced the shocks. I will take at the mounts and check for deterioration.

As far as sway bar mounts and end links, I can do a visual inspection, but other than that how do you tell if those need to be replaced?

Re: Loud Thumb in the rear at low speeds

Thanks for identifying the year, as you can see (below) it makes a difference where parts are concerned. In addition, based on the year & mileage, these normally last longer, so this may not be the problem, yet they should be checked anyway. On the sway bar mounts & end links, check for clearance between the bar & mount and deterioration of the bushings on the end-links. Another thing you should check is the exhaust hangers & brackets, as well as look for proper clearance between the exhaust/muffler & body. Visual inspection of all components is the only way to find the problem. It may be necessary to put the car on a lift to check everything! Good Luck.
