2002 Toyota Camry Issues!

I am new to AF and am having some serious issues with my 2002 Toyota Camry. In the middle of my trip home last week my engine started to act up. It was knocking pretty badly at idle and all speeds. It seemed like it wanted to stall out at red lights. I didn't take it above 40mph because it seemed to be having a very hard time getting up to speed. I managed to get it home (only about 2 miles from where the symptoms begain) and it smelled like burn oil. What am I dealing with here?

Some background on the car. It is a 4 Cylinder engine and sadly enough I have neglected to perform regular service on the vehcile. Oil changes every 3-5k is about it. However, it have been about 9 since my last so I am afraid that it may be some engine trouble due to this.

Any help is much appreciated!

Is your "Check Engine" light on?

I think 9,000 miles on regular oil is an excessive oil change interval. I would suggest you change the oil and hope for the best, but I believe you would be wasting your time. I think that it is time to rebuild the engine, replace the engine with a used one, or sell the car as is and get a new one.

Thanks Brian. It is excessive... I was hopinig that it didn't have to come down to replacing the engine... looks like it may be time for a new car.

Yes it is. It came on right when the engine started to knock.

If "Yes" is about "Check Engine" light, you need to read the code stored in the car's computer. Go to Autozone (if you have them in your area). They will read your code for free. Do not pay much attention to their advise on how to fix it. You better come back and post the code here.

Good luck,

Sam

Re: 2002 Toyota Camry Issues!

I guess something needs to be cleared up before you make a decision on what to do with your engine. When you say the engine began to knock, do you mean it made a loud knocking sound? or did you mean the engine began to ping? Some people call pinging knocking. Since you had such old oil in the engine, I assumed you meant a loud knocking noise as in a bad rod bearing. If you meant that it began pinging as in pre-ignition, then the Check Engine Light is much more meaningful and you will probably not have to replace the engine. Please clarify.

Re: 2002 Toyota Camry Issues!

In the condition you describe, I doubt you can or should drive it to a store to have it read as that may worsen the damage done. Check the oil level. If the stick is dry, there's your answer...no oil. If not, then you can borrow one from AZ or other parts store (deposit required) to check the stored code. Post back with the code number. Doesn't look good...we'll stay tuned.
