87 Honda Accord Fuel Injection Problem?

Hello,

I have a 1987 Honda Accord that has Fuel Injection over last couple of weeks I noticed that the vehicle would shut down while I'm driving occasionally, then after about 5 minutes start back up. Sometimes it would drive about one half of mile before repeating the process and I noticed that from cold start ( like over night in Michigan ) it could be driven 10 to 15 miles without any problems but anything more and it shuts down. After careful inspection I found that the spark being delivered to to the spark-plugs is adequate and that there is a no fuel condition present during the shut down period. The two questions that I have are about the fuel pump an main system relay. Would the fuel pump act intermittent as it starts to fail and could the main service relay cause the vehicle to act in the manner described above?

Any insight that anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the problem is fairly predictable. It would be pretty easy to check for power out of the EFI relay when it stalls. No power replace the relay. You can take the relay apart and inspect the solder joints. If any of them look cracked (it will look like a very faint circle) you can try resoldering them. I have had pretty good luck with resoldering joints.

The accord models all accross the board seem to have the same type of problem. typically with this you expect to replace the main relay. this would be the first thing i'd check

Re: 87 Honda Accord Fuel Injection Problem?

Update!

First, let me start by giving thanks to replies that I received as they were very informative and pointed me in the right direction from the start. I was able to swap a main system relay from a low mileage accord that was involved in a wreck and it was sitting at one of those u pull it auto parts yards. My car has been running fine ever since and not one shut off, I have drove about sixty miles and still going, needless to say, that the part was pretty cheap. It was a nightmare accessing the main system relay so I just left the old one in place and disconnected the wire connector, then I used a few plastic cable ties to secure the new one. Later on I might replace it with a new main system relay but right now I am on the road again!

Once again thanks a lot for the timely information, I wish I could do a commercial or something on the speed.
