Exclamation brakes help....drums/shoes and rotors/pads

hello everyone

I am replacing all brake components on my chevy caprice 1991 sedan.

I am replacing the following:

- rotors/pads
- drums/shoes
- hardware kits
- hoses

Here is what I would like to know.

I want to paint my brake parts with something that is rust preventive, so it won't allow the parts to get rusted. At the same time I would also like to paint it a colour as well. Now can you tell me the best one for rust and if it is black in color I don't mind because that way it will do me 2 in 1 rust+paint.
Let me know with brand/model and also how to apply.

p:s I used the POR 15 rust paint which is black, but I don't know if its good, I did the whole one new DRUM with it and it shines really good but then I noticed it is not UV capable so what should I do now?

Re: brakes help....drums/shoes and rotors/pads

I've had fairly good success with plain old Rust-O-Leum enamel on the drums and the inner and outer hub surfaces of rotors. The drums don't usually get hot enough to burn the paint off the exterior, and the unswept areas of the rotor hub stay cool enough to hold the paint. They all get dirty and are somewhat shielded by that and the wheels, so UV hasn't been a noticeable problem for me.

I've seen powder coated rotors and the coatings peeling off them in sheets, so that may not be the best option unless you make special preparations. The bigger issue with new drums and rotors is to get them clean enough for the coatings to adhere. The rust preventive coatings often applied to them when they are machined and boxed can be tough to clean off well enough to get a good paintable surface.

I have been using rustolem as well, holds up good , and is very cheap..cleaning with mineral spirits [low odor paint thinner] is all you need to remove all the oil coating which should be removed before installing...painting two coats and allowing this paint to harden is best before installing...I wait a couple of days then install..

sanding the rotor pad faces with 220 sandpaper in a circular direction gets good pad seating results...

no you do not paint the inside of the drum...this would be where the drum contacts the axle...on this I apply some anti seize compound so that the drum comes off easy...the inside of the drum is a machined surface you do not want to throw off the alignment ..with the axle..

obviously no paint on the shoe contact area...

while painting the calipers can I paint just about all of the caliper? or does the calipers too have spots that should not be painted?

Thanks alot for all the help.

It must be all that partying with the Olympics being in town..

As far as painting the caliper, clean it well and tape off the following:
piston and seal
Guide pin holes and sleeves
Where the hose attaches

Oh yea, and don't forget to take out the brake pads also..
