88 Accord Idle

I have a 88 Accord Carbeurated.

The car is doing some wierd things. I was parked at the bank and started it. It took 2 tries to get it running. The starter had a strange issue turning.
What was happening was the RPM would go up to max and drop back down after I quit turning it. The third time it started right up.
I got on the road and it started warming up again.
It was idling high and when it warmed up it dropped down and started flucuating from 500-1500 It was about to cut off then all of the sudden it went up and back down. It isnt a slow flucuation. its constantly straight up and back down over and over.

I suspected possible electric issues becuase the car would shock me when I would get out of it, and also because of the strange starter issue.

What could this be? im bout tempted to open the engine and replace the valves, pistons , etc , and get a new carb. This idle mess is getting annoying.

Re: 88 Accord Idle

I have very little experience with carburetted engines, but I would start with spraying choke with carburettor cleaner.

Good luck,

Sam

Re: 88 Accord Idle

I'm kind of in the same boat as you except mine is 89 and it only idles out of control when shes pretty cold and i can't kick it down until its somewhat warm... I have a feeling it has something to do with the autochoke. i just haven't gotten around to investigating this more closely as i've been too busy l8ly, please let us know if you find anything
