90 V6 Camry oil leak

my mechanic says $400 to replace my leaky valve cover gaskets. The oil is getting into the plug holes and shorting out the ignition. After degreasing, I plan to clean out those holes and see what's up. If his diagnosis is correct, is this something I can do at home? Is there some procedure, photos, etc. on-line?

Re: 90 V6 Camry oil leak

Sure, you can do this at home. If you can, get all the gaskets and tools you predict you will need before you start. Read the following information in the manual and post questions before you start. You will need at least a set of valve cover (head cover) gaskets and spark plug tube gaskets, as well as some Form In Place Gasket material (seen on page EM102) such as Permatex black or Toyota FIPG.

The chapters of the complete Field Service Manual for your Camry can be found in the link in the sticky post at the top of this forum. The Engine Mechanical chapter can be downloaded from the link here.

See page EM80 and also pages EM75 and forward for information on removal of any accessories or parts you have to remove to get to the valve covers. The tube gaskets are shown on page EM101.

Of course, you don't have to remove the heads to replace the gaskets in which you are interested. Just eyeball the valve covers and find the removal sequence for the assembly or part you have to remove in order to access the valve cover bolts or to physically remove the valve covers. Clean all mating surfaces well, including the heads where the valve covers sit, before you reinstall them.

Re: 90 V6 Camry oil leak

Unless you know the seals are shot, I'd try to re-torque them. Yes, that's the lazy in me talking, but there's a reason the price you got quoted wasn't low. The front bank seal is easy, but the rear takes alot more. You'll likely have to remove the intake manifold as well to get back in there, so plan on a new manifold gasket as well. Just go slow and you should be okay, but be prepared to get into some tight spots in between the rear bank and the firewall. Good luck!

I was thinking that by spending the time to access the bolts, you might as well just replace the seals. If retorquing is easy, go for it.

Re: 90 V6 Camry oil leak

Thanks for the recent posts. The manual is a little sketchy, but I think I can manage. It looks like I'll have to do more detective work, someone has suggested to me that the leak my also be the distributor (thought I fixed that) anyway a steam clean and then lets see. Thanks again, I will be back for more.
