Question 87 S-10 4x4, auto, died driving at highway speed?

1987 chevy s-10 4x4 with automatic overdrive trans, 2.8L v-6. Driving down highway and motor died and backfired bad. Tried to start it again and motor backfired bad once again so I didn't try again. Didn't want to ruin anything more. Was thinking maby timing chain broke? Where should I start to look first for the cause???

Check for lose of spark to all plugs and for lose of fuel pressure.
Any check engine lights or codes?
Compression check should show broken timing chain.
How is the compression?
