Perhaps my definition of cruiser is different to yours.
I don't consider a car with a turbo-charged small volume inline 4 with a short ratio gearbox and rock hard suspension to be anything like a car for "cruising".

If it is between an Evo and a Scoobie then first things to look up are what models of either cars were/ are available in the US market.

Secondly, all of the rave reviews you tend to see on these cars are talking about the Japanese/Euro/UK models of the cars which depending on the year/model are different to what you got in the states.
For all you kids that get a hard on when-ever you watch Top Gear; that means your US spec cars aren't the ones being reviewed on that show.
For example, as far as I can recall, your evo of whatever edition it was, did not have all of the parts that made the rest of the world's cars so good (might've been the hicas or the active yaw).
On the other hand, the Subaru's in America have a much worse reputation for reliability/quality than our UK cars that in the first 7 years never had a warranty related recall (or something like that...).

Going back to the question of what you call cruising.
If by that you mean a car to thrash around the streets on weekends then the far more important question is this: how much do you have per month to spend on the upkeep/maintance of the car.
For example, do you know how much it costs to put 4 new factory spec tyres on an Evo or how long it takes for an Evo to empty its rather piddly 55 litre fuel tank or what a new clutch costs?

Buying a car is always the easiest part.

Drunken Monkey, indeed you are correct, our version of the Evo (VIII, arrived in 2003) was a stripped out version that paled in comparison to what the UK had available. Look up 'Mitsubishi Evo' on Wikipedia, a very interesting timeline for an enthusiasts bedtime story...

"However, the internal components for the American versions were largely stripped-down versions of the specifications for the Japanese Lancer Evolution VIII. No US-spec Evolution model prior to the Evo X has active yaw control, including the 2006 Evolution IX. The American 2003 and 2004 GSRs are without the helical limited-slip front differential and 6-speed manual transmission."

So yes, the American Evo paid little homage to the original. We couldn't even get it in Canada until the Evo X, which actually turned out to be an impressive little car, even if it was still offered with very limited engine options. But I would have to contend the reliability of Subaru's WRX. While the STI model requires religious maintenance, the engines are built well, and as far as I know the cars enjoy a favourable reliability rating. I have a good friend that swears by them and will only buy Subaru vehicles, he hasn't had much bad luck to speak of.

As far as cruising, well, maybe the OP has a different understanding of 'cruising' than you and I (Drunken Monkey), as I as well would think more of cruising being a Cadillac or a Lincoln.

If you have good weather, the most fun you can have for cheap is a Mazda MX-5 Miata. Get past the image, chicks have moved on to Mustang V6 convertibles or Volkswagen Beetle's, so it's safe. The diminutive Mazda doesn't have a turbo, nor does it have AWD, but anybody who has driven one will tell you the telepathic steering and perfectly balanced handling will reward the driver again and again. It's cheap to maintain, cheap to drive, and easy to insure. It has maintained a similar recipe for almost two decades because it works.

If you still want a turbo AWD, the cars I listed previously will offer a much more compliant and relaxed suspension setup than an STI or Evo.

MSN Autos says you guys got the Mazdaspeed6 - it's out of production now, but it was built between 2006-2007 and used the 2.3L turbo out of the Mazdaspeed3. The car drove all four wheels through a Haldex AWD system, coupled to a 6-speed short throw manual. I have never driven one but they have a beautifully appointed interior, aggressive suspension and wheel setup, and they are just the right size. The only downfall is in reviews the handling is often referred to as 'heavy', the car apparently feels lumbering compared to it's little brother, the MS3.

Most Volvo cars are pretty vanilla but the S60R is not - 300 hp, 6-speed stick, AWD. And the Audi, well, any of the I4's are available with Quattro, so the OP really has his choice as to which model he wanted.

Yea I missed the Mazda speed 6, Dunno much bout the Volvo, as for Audi's he'd be lookin 04 and older

As far as I know, 1998. I think they had one available in Europe before that though.
