water pump replacement
I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD 4WD 6.0L V8 with A/C. I need to replace the water pump. Does anyone know which make of water pump is comparable to the origional part. I only want to have to do this once. I want a part that is going to last.

Re: water pump replacement
The dealers around here will give a comparable price on most parts. Nothing quite like oem usually. But I trust napa for most parts, I don't like the box stores are all, napa is trying to become one I know, but they aren't yet. The carquests around here has good parts too.

Quote:
water pumps fail when the coolant is defective,,fan out of balance/bent..or the fan clutch is n/g.. usually these water pump leaks are actually the gasket of the water pump...engine mount,,,metal gets corroded.. |

Re: water pump replacement
You can get new waterpumps from Carquest too,a little bit more than a rebuilt and it is an option.I will never step in a Napa parts store, sponsorship is on a Toyota race car driven by Micheal Waltrip and I boycott that.Plus their parts are very expensive and they do sell some junk parts.Their alternators and starters are this way.My father bought a Chevy truck with a bad starter, was a new Napa starter.Avoid using the special fan blade wrenches, break real easy due to being too thin and are a huge waste of money.I use an air hammer with a long bit to remove the fan blade which is a quicker way.Keep the belt on when doing it this way.

Re: water pump replacement
I just replaced the water pump on my 1998 5.7L. That clutch fan nut was a bitch. I didn't even know about when I started but I looked up a few threads and it seemed like no one even knew which way to loosen it. Anyway, I took off the entire water pump with fan attached, then literly destroyed the old water pump. It unscrewed normal right hand thread, counter-clockwise. I sprayed penetrating fluid and let it sit an hour. I had to put it in a vise and hit the wrench with a 3 lb sledge 20 times before it broke loose. Without that goofy nut it would have been a very easy job. I see there is a special tool to hold the fan...I sure could have used that.

Re: water pump replacement
A quick search of the board archives would have revealed that it is a RH thread, and that a 1-5/16 wrench would fit it (or 32mm). The fan clutch hub is best broken loose with the accessory belt still in place and a strap wrench to help restrain the pump pulley while tapping on the wrench with a dead blow hammer.

Re: water pump replacement
I have a 32mm wrench it was too small so I used a giant adjustable wrench. I think it's a 36mm.

Re: water pump replacement
Obviously you havent done alot of water pumps. I can say that I have had to warranty out pumps of all brands but I found napa and federated are good and maybe advance in a pinch.

Re: water pump replacement
I only do new, for like $5 there is no point especially if I have to take the timing belt and half of the engine off to get it.
