Motor oil in Trans?!?

'96 4cyl. AUTO
I may have inadvertantly put motor oil in the trans when I did a drain and fill. not 100% sure. I thought I had bought trans fluid AND oil, but when I was done only had (full) trans fluid bottles left!
The damn bottles look the same! I think I would have noticed the fluid color not being right, so I think I just didn't buy any motor oil. BUT, IF I DID put oil in the trans, How bad is it? Will drain and fill again if needed.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Motor oil in Trans?!?

First, check the color of the lube on your Trans. dip stick. You should be able to tell by the color. You may have to idle engine for several minutes to allow lube to fully circulate, but best not to drive until you know.

Don't forget, the torque converter holds a few quarts!

Re: Motor oil in Trans?!?

If the engine was started with the oil mix, all of the oil would be contaminated.
Did you drain both the converter + transmission?

Re: Motor oil in Trans?!?

DON'T start the car. If you did put oil in, starting it would just circulate it all through the tranny, making cleanout ALOT harder. As suggested, check the dipstick for color...red is good, tan is bad. If bad, you should remove the pan to clean out as much oil as possible. Replace the filter too as it was soaked in oil. You could spray a carb/choke cleaner on the underside of the valve body to dissolve any oil...have the drip pan ready

The TC would not be drained in a regular drain/fill on this engine/transaxle, so it will still have tranny fluid...never seen a drain hole for the TC, though thinking about it there's a strange metal round cover on the outside of the tranny case just held in by clips...a window to the TC? Not even mentioned in the FSM. Or am I confused with my other cars? Have to go check & report back, if it's not too cold to go crawling on cold pavement outside.

Re: Motor oil in Trans?!?

You can only drain a Torgue converter, after you remove an automatic transmission.
What about a power flush!
