351W rear main seal leak

Just pulled the Tremec trans to get ready for the Quaife sequntial replacment. Noticed a small amount of oil inside the bellhousing, my guess is the rear main seal is leaking. Can you slide in a new seal without dropping the crank? Any other ideas on the source of an oil leak?

Sorry I can't answer your question but your project intrigues me.

I would love to know what model of Quaife you are using, where you got it, how you end up adpating it, and how it does. Keep us posted. thanks

Re: 351W rear main seal leak

We're working with Scotty from Taylor Racing in Plano TX, taylor-race.com, who are Quaife dealers. Decided on the 60G 6-speed and other then the usual fittment issues looks like an easy swap into the GTS.

Don't know if you've ever run a sequntial box or not but they are a step above the usual H-pattern that we're all used to. Very quick up and down shifts without the chance of missing a gear. Upshifts came be made without the clutch and downshifts require just a lift of the throttle and a light tap on on the clutch to lighten the strain on the driveline. The first time I ran a Barber car with a sequntial Iwas sold.

Cost is on the pricey side, around $10k for the Quaife, fitted T.O. bearing, input shaft machining, bellhousing modifications. Driven disc and other bits and pieces are extra.

I'm leaving tomorrow for Barrett-Jackson but will provide some photos of the installation if you're interested once I get back and the Quaife arrives.

Check the engine. You may not have a Ford in there. It may be a Porsche 911 motor by mistake.

Thanks for sharing.
It wil be interesting to hear what it does for your lap times. I love them, and see no reason for an H pattern in any car.

Re: 351W rear main seal leak

Dave,
Depends on the seal. The Fords have 1 & 2 piece. I'm pretty sure the 2 piece can be done crank shaft in (had the same problem on a crate motor in a street car). 1 piece crank has to move.

Re: 351W rear main seal leak

Rich,
I'm confused by your post. I thought the one piece just gets pushed into place around the crank once the flywheel is removed. I thought that generally the two piece requires the crank to be dropped as it is retained by the rear main bearing cap and a recess in the block. I thought there might be an alternate way to just drop the rear cap and push the upper half of the seal out, but that the risk of having a leak after forcing the new seal into the upper groove around the crank surface was pretty high. I thought the newer 351W motors got the one piece seal. Don't the SVO four bolt main blocks all have the one piece seals as well?
