Re: What swap is best for me?

Most of the info I've gotten on strengths of parts, and engine combinations I got from this book "High Performance Honda Builder's Handbook" by Joe Pettitt. It has a lot of good details. And as far as I know, the stock bottom end should be okay for your nitro hit, dunno the period of time it'll last though, I figure a long time?

In order to Bolt on the vtec B16 to the non-vtec B20 some machine work is needed: "The machine work involves moving the dowel pins on the cam gear side of the head. They've got to be swapped from one side to the other so the head will line up and fit on the non-Vtec block.

In addition the stock oil passage for the VTEC has to be plugged from the block side of the head. You can drill, tap, and install a brass plug before having the head decked to make sure it is even."(this is of course if you plan on using the VTEC system, in my plan I decided to just run a hondata computer and throw out VTEC completly)

It appears that you can use the stock components with the B16 head perfectly fine. "For the record, though, you can interchange the GSR pistons and del sol pistons into the LS block to raise compression". Not that you want high comp for nitro, but there ya go. My whole shebang about the aluminum block, and eagle rotating assem. is just making it REALLY NICE, you shouldnt have to do that to make this combo work.

I recommend the book though, has good tech info, for an middle to experienced level tuner.

Re: What swap is best for me?

I've had all of those motors except for the b20. B20 is not capable of revving in stock form. My gf got mad at me and blew her b20 in her hatch (it's ok, she was building a gsr block to be boosted anyways). We all know that the b20's got paper thin walls.
B16...b16 is fun from 4k on. However, this is not fun for your everyday driving.
SOHC motor? No way, not in the list that you've provided.

I voted with the b18b, that mated to an s1/y1/ys1/j1 would be the most fun out of your list. If you were to boost it, I would stick with a longer geared tranny. Or down the road you could slap a VTEC head on there.

Re: What swap is best for me?

I have a B16A2, and I dont see how you mean it to be "not fun for everyday driving"? My CRX is a daily and I dont have any problems or dislikes about it. Maybe you mean because with the YS1 tranny on the highway your riding around 4-5k, eating up some gas? My only downside about the B16 is, I wish I had more torque, but for what the engine is, its making a typical amount, so its not really a critisism for the engine. It is a lot of fun above 4k for sure.

While I understand your defense, I still stand by what I said. FD's on LS/b16/GSR trannies are all bound to eat up gas, and THAT, we all HAVE to live with.

But I've owned and driven b16/b18b/b18c1/d16a6/d16z6 and various b16/b18c1 builds, and the b16 and d16 (of course) are hands down the worst out of the listed motors as a daily driver. And you prove my point by saying you wished you had a tad bit of torque.

Not trying to argue, but I'm just trying to give the kid my opinion, since I've daily driven those motors.

Re: What swap is best for me?

well while we are all on the same topic, what do you believe would be a fairly good n/a(s) without NOS, that has somewhat of a reasonable price tag, since the b20 costs alot (from what i read earlier).

Re: What swap is best for me?

b20's are really not that expensive., and yes you can do machine work to do the ls/vtec, or you could just buy the dowel pins that are made for the ls/vtec.i daily drive a b16 and i think it is a good dd. i find it to be the best overall engine. and if you don't like it as a dd then get a tranny with longer gears. honda engines are high rev engines. get use to it.

Re: What swap is best for me?

stockCRXSI, okay I hear ya, I was just curious not arguing either.

I'm looking into doing a B20/B16 combo, in attempts to get more torque, without going turbo. Does this sound like a good route, or is there a better engine/combination to go N/A with that has good torque?

If you wanna do B20/VTEC you better do it right and dont skimp on the build cause it'll bite you in the ass later on.

Re: What swap is best for me?

First off TSC is an idiot. What is fast to one person is may not be what another person considers fast. From what I hear he wants a reliable car that can handle its own on the street. The B18 is a great choice. It is known to hold 75 shot forever with a simple fuel pump upgrade and timing taking out of it. Use a good trans though. Stay away from the ls trans. I prefer the gsr. Just do some research for yourself and get what you feel is perfect for you.
