96 Park avenue wheel speed sensor

Hello,
I need to replace a front wheel speed sensor. Is the sensor itself replaceable or must I replace the complete bearing hub.I had an ABS light come on the dash and I had a garage do a scan on it and they said it had a short to ground on the right front sensor.I will check all the related wiring first before replacing the sensor.
Thanks

Napa shows hub and bearing/sensor as an assy only.

There's a graveyard of cheap VSS, because of Cash For Clunkers!

He's not talking about a VSS, he's talking about a Wheel Speed Sensor... Its part of the wheel hub assembly and is not serviceable

Re: 96 Park avenue wheel speed sensor

Hello,
Advanced auto shows a bearing with same part number with sensor that will fit left or right front.Gm parts direct shows the left and right are different sensors. How will the advance auto part work for either side?My auto manual says the left and right are not interchangeable.

I prefer NATIONAL Part # 513087 Front Wheel Hub Assembly, they fit either side! You have to pay a few bucks more for quality parts, but you don't have to replace them every year! BTW, it is always best to replace as a set, (both front or both rear)

Re: 96 Park avenue wheel speed sensor

I went and bought the national part. The service manual says to install a new hub nut. Nobody in town sells one and I will have to oder one from rock auto.Is it really necessary to replace it or can I use the old one as long as I use the proper torque setting?

Re: 96 Park avenue wheel speed sensor

You can use use the old nut just make sure it is properly torqued, some after market bearings use different specs, check the info in the box.

There were no instructions in the box.The service manual says 107 lb. ft.I guess I will use that.

Re: 96 Park avenue wheel speed sensor

I use 118 ft. lbs with National hubs and have never had a problem. When reusing the spindle nut, put two drops of Loctite 'Blue' #242 on the spindle threads in the area where the nut is secure against the hub, then torque to spec. BTW, Use a drift punch, or large screwdriver inserted in the rotor fins (resting against the caliper) to prevent the hub from turning while torquing. (Never use impact wrench for tightening after the hub nut makes contact with the hub) This is also good time to check brake pads, caliper float & rotors.

Re: 96 Park avenue wheel speed sensor

After I hopefully fix the problem,Will I have to go back and pay again to have the lights reset to go off on the dash or is there a way I can reset the system without the use of a scanner?

Re: 96 Park avenue wheel speed sensor

Be sure to turn the climate control OFF (while engine is running) before trying this procedure. Try disconnecting the negative battery cable first, then the positive cable and touch the two together to drain residual power. Reconnect the positive cable (+), then the negative (-) cable.

Thanks,
Has this procedure worked for you in the past or is this a guess?I have seen other posts that this procedure will not always work.

Re: 96 Park avenue wheel speed sensor

It may not always work, but then again it might, so you have nothing to loose and it will not hurt anything to try it. I use a scanner, so there is no need for me to try the procedure on my personal vehicles. I have seen it work on some other GM vehicles.
