Re: Timing belt or chain

First off, What year model do you have? I have a V6 Mazda Tribute 2001 model and it has a timing chain. The 4 cylinder tributes have a timing belt and should be changed about 90,000 miles(according to Haynes Shop Manual) or if the history of the tribute is not known, inspect and/or change immediately. The belt should be checked at 60,000 miles also and again at 90,000. The owners manual should have the intervals listed as to replace the belt as "scheduled maintenance." Buy a Haynes manual and it will give you a very comprehensive guide to your tribute. They sell for about $20 at any auto parts store. The Haynes manuals are specific to model years (mine is 2001-2003) and will be very helpful with info. Best of luck to you. Also, the Tribute is the same as a Ford Escape.

Re: Timing belt or chain

The 2.0L has a belt, it needs tobe changed every 90k miles.
The 4-cylinder 2.3 engine, and 3.0 V6 both have a maintenance free timing chain.
