Re: Can you turbo a standard 2 litre Engine?
Yes! But there is a lot of work involed. Here are some changes that will have be made for a turbo conversion to work.
1. Compression ratio will have to be lowered! (Many ways to do this) 2. The cooling system will have to be improved as turbo engines make more heat than a nonturbo. e.g (bigger radiator) 3. A map sensor will have to wired into the engine managment along with an extra injector to increase the fuel mixture when the turbo is boosting. ( there are many kits and D.I.Y methods of doing this or you could just not bother and let the engine run lean and kill its self from deternation) 4. To make the conversion worth while an intercooling will have found that will fit to the car. 5. Dont foget the turbo. the right size turbo for the engine size will make the world of differance. (you dont want boost to kick in at 5500rpm when your car red lines a 6000rpm or at 1000rpm then dies out at 3000rpm missing the best part of the power band) 6. A exhast manifold will have to be made to fit your engine and the turbo you want to use. 7. You will have to find a high pressure oil gallary from the oil pump to surply the turbo with a high pressure oil feed and also find a place for the oil to drain back to the sump. 8. The inlet manifold has to be very air tight at all the conections other wise the boost will leak away before entering the engine.(maybe get a custum plenum made to stop leakage of boost) 9. Last but not lest the engine has to be of sound condition other wise all the extra stress on the engine will just kill it and the hole job was a waste of time and you have no car. There is more to consider but i think they are the main problems to overcome when doing a turbo conversion. If you can source the parts very cheaply and you have the knowlege and a place and tools to do the conversion and a second car to get from a2b while doing its worth it. But it might be easyer to buy a second hand turbo charged enine with all the loom, sensors, ecu, ect and try to fit it into your car. What ever way you want to go its a very big, time consuming, exspensive project. You could just buy a Turbocharged car! It would be easyer. |
