Re: Who made the BEST looking/best running muscle cars

I always thought the Pontiac GTO, and Olds 442 where the best looking, though the Chryslers were probably the best running and baddest.

i think the 68 GTO is the best looking. if you include pony cars 69 trans am and 69/70 fastback mustangs are sexy, too. no idea what runs the best, i have very limited first hand experience.

Re: Who made the BEST looking/best running muscle cars

Millclar has a "clue". He mentions true muscle cars. He doesn't throw pony cars or sports cars into the "mix". If a car is a "pony car", it is a pony car, NOT a muscle car... No matter HOW MUCH MUSCLE it has. "Muscle car" is a CLASS, not just a vague description.

Agreed, the GM cars were the style leaders, but some of those Mopes looked pretty good. I liked the '70/'71 Fords and Mercs, too. Got a soft spot for the '66 Fairlane GT, too, 'cuz I had one... And while the MOPAR offerings included Hemi, which pretty much "cinched" the top straight-line performers, the GM cars would drive circles around them in corners.

I got "hooked" on GTO at a young age, and for logical reasons. If you could beat it in a straight line, you weren't going to beat it in the corners. If you could beat it in the corners, you weren't gonna beat it in a straight line... Simply the best "balance" for a true muscle car. Sorta "fitting" as it was the original!

Re: Who made the BEST looking/best running muscle cars

I think its pretty much a matter of personal opinion and experience.

I like the FE and Lima powered Ford intermediates especially the Cobra Jet cars, but just about every brand made cool cars during that era.

I agree the GTOs were sharp, especially the '65-'67s, with their stacked dual headlights and open grille with central pillar, and also the '70 GTOs.

From a performance standpoint, the hemi Mopars, 427 Ford Thunderbolts, 429SCJ drag pack Torino Cobras, LS6 Chevelles, Ram Air IV GTOs and 440 Magnum GTX/Chargers were hard to argue with. Also watch out for sleepers too such as the '70.5 429CJ/SCJ Falcons.

Re: Who made the BEST looking/best running muscle cars

Shpuker,

I like your Z-car picture. When the 240Z hit, it was a revolution, an E-type that started every time and didn't leak oil for 1/3 less money.

A few guys in my Corvette club bailed out of their Sting Rays and got Z's, which we let them run in our slalom events.

Historic threads like this can keep going forever.
