cant seem to find correct flywheel 68 bird

Hi, I have a 1968 firebird with a 1973 pontiac 400 in it. I am swapping it from an automatic to a 4 speed. After checking the date code on the block and doing research, 1967-1979 flywheels are supposed to fit. I purchased one from summit, and while the center hole is the correct size for the crank, the six bolt holes dont line up. I have turned it because the six holes arent symmetrical, but two dont match, unsure what to do. Furthermore, I have the gm part # off of the old flexplate from the automatic, it is gm 9779070, but i cant seem to find it anywhere to see what i have. has anyone else ran into this?

Re: cant seem to find correct flywheel 68 bird

If the flywheel is truly a "Pontiac", it does have an assymetric bolt pattern on the hub. It WILL "fit", but must be rotated until all six hoiles do line up. There is no difference between the auto trans and manual trans, as far as crankshafts are concerned.

Yours should have the 2.75" "register" hole. Summit doesn't offer a Pontiac flywheel in their own "brand". Is the one you bought a McCleod or Hayes? If not, chances are it fits a Chevy, not a Pontiac.
