Tackometer failure

I have a 2001 Park Avenue with a 3.8L engine. The tackometer occasionally quits working. The engine runs fine even when the tackometer quits. I could use some feedback on how to troubleshoot this problem.

i had same exact problem with my 97 pa. i replaced the crankshaft sensor and have not had a problem since.
