Timing Belt Tensioner

I'm getting ready to do the water pump and timing belt on my 1995 1.3 L LSI Metro. Is it necessary to replace any other parts, specifically the timing belt tensioner? My car has 117,000 miles. If so, where can I get it, except for Chevrolet at exhorbitant cost?

Thanks.

F100.

Re: Timing Belt Tensioner

Last week, I had my Water Pump, Fan Belt and Tensioner Pulley replaced.

I bought the Water Pump and Tensioner Pulley at Schucks (O'Reilly) in
Spokane, WA (Eastern WA). Checker, Schucks & Kragen

Water Pump was $39 (Cardone) - comes with gasket.

Tensioner Pulley was $45 (Brand ?)

Of course mine was for a '93 3 cylinder.

Do the Fan Belt also....or have one in the trunk just in case.

Re: Timing Belt Tensioner

You definitely want to do replace the tensioner, re-using the old one is simply inviting disaster to visit and when it does it will quite probably undo all your previous work. Why risk it in the name of saving a couple of bucks? I would think you would value your time and frustration more than the price of a tensionser. Personally I would not reuse the tensioner unless I had no other alternative. Keep in mind you are expecting this part to last the life of the new timing belt - another 100k miles.

I've had good luck ordering parts from Rock Auto (a whole lot cheaper than the dealer, you get to choose which level of part you want, it gets delivered to your door and there are often discounts avialable if you search for discount codes)

Good Luck!

Re: Timing Belt Tensioner

I'll admit I didnt change the one on the JDM motor I put in. Heck I was so strapped at the time I reused the old timing belt. It lasted a year and a half, but I could see cracks in it at the time. Yeah I know... save the emails...

Anyway, as an experienced tech I would have to agree with the last poster, if its worth doing, its worth doing right, a fe wmore bucks really is the cost of the tow in the middle of the night a year down the road. And the bad news is you get to fix it anyway, probably with a few more parts.

Your gonna have it all pulled apart anyway, why not?? Its the same logic we used to use on the V-8's. When we would pull a motor we woul always replace the oils pump. Back then the were only $16 fo an OEM, and you couldnt (easily) change on in the car. if they went bad usually your engine was ruined, so..... why not?

edit

and BTW I did spend $55 on a tow when my timing belt broke. Then I got to buy one for only $19.99+ tax
