Blower Motor Resistor Pack

Hey all...I just wanted to share a few quick pictures of what I believe to be a problem with many chevrolet vehicles (this is the 3rd one I'm aware of happening to) and the blower motor resistor pack.

It seems that the pack gets so hot, it litteraly burns itself up, leaving burn marks on the board. I've had it happen on a late 90's model pickup, a 2002, and now a 2004...What gives?

Anywho, here are the pictures.

i had this problem on 2000 sil the cabin air filter got too dirty restricted air flow and the circuit runs on board got hot which then caused the protective coating to lift then moisture finished it .on installing new resister module i coated the module better than original with circuit board coating spray . and keep the cabin air filter and windshield
air inlet grille clean, snow blocking air inlet screen will damage this part. it is possible to repair this part if you are skilled in this type of work......

Re: Blower Motor Resistor Pack

i can not see the borad well. if the photo could show it better i mite be able to tell you what to replace to get it working. the easyest way would be to replace all componits with higer rated ones. and add fuses in line.

the runs on the board are resistive in nature, this is the speed control , as in the past the wire resistors worked perfectly, so GM decided to screw up a solid design.......wire resistors can be substituted for the runs, using the same board , or mod old style, to work with this mount in the air box. the heat because of lack of air flow, not current causes the runs to fail........

Re: Blower Motor Resistor Pack

we can make it cheaper and faster. now the guy who buys the truck gets it in the end. the traces are not made to take the years of heat. so thay end up lifting and burning.

Re: Blower Motor Resistor Pack

Also missing blower speeds on 94 Silverado and bought replacement resistor pack. Don't laugh, but WHERE does it go? I removed the glovebox but have not seen a way to get further into the blower housing. The Haynes manual doesn't depict this area very well.

Re: Blower Motor Resistor Pack

The resistor pack is actually screwed to the side of the blower motor casing...might be easier to get at from under the dash instead of through the glovebox opening. Hope you were good at Twister when you were young...good luck!

Re: Blower Motor Resistor Pack

Thanks jdmccright - I'll tackle it again this weekend. When I tried it before, hanging half in / half out the door, it started to rain so I buttoned it back up and just lived with it for past few months. AC's got a new compressor that blows really cold so I shouldn't complain too much. Yeah, two weeks away from Xmas and we're still needing AC here in FL...

Re: Blower Motor Resistor Pack

I've just spent 30 min trying to look under the dash. There doesn't appear any space at all between the inside of the firewall and the heater blower assy on the whole righthand side. It goes right up to the firewall. Tried looking over towards the driver's side and although there are a few places I can see the firewall and backside of the dashboard I didn't see anything resembling my resistor pack. Any further ideas or advice? Thanks again.

Re: Blower Motor Resistor Pack

1994 Silverado 3/4 ton Extended Cab with 7.4L V8. I don't know what you mean by new and old body style. Dad pulled a 22' trailer around the country including two R/T CA-FL trips and we drove it here to FL when he passed. Despite all that its still just under 60K mi. I only use it for trips to Home Depot and the occasional trip to Orlando. Thx for any guidance!

Re: Blower Motor Resistor Pack

the resistor is #6 in the picture.1994 model years had 3 and 4 speed fans you'll need to know that when getting a resistor.

Re: Blower Motor Resistor Pack

Thanks to everyone who contributed!! I just got it changed and it works!! Once I found the resistor pack behind 4 relays on a bracket right on top of the duct directly behind the glovebox, I realized it was different than the spare I'd purchased months ago. I took my part(s) back to Advance Auto and they exchanged for the right one. What a BEAR it was to remove and replace!!! Apparently Adv Auto's database had "with" and "w/o" A/C reversed - that's why the first part they gave me was wrong. The fan actually has 5 speeds - Lo, Med, Hi, but there's also Lo-Med and Med-Hi in between the main 3 speeds. Thanks again all.
