05 with bad fuel gauge

my fuel gauge was acting funny and a guy told me to put a new gas cap on...well it worked for a few days and then started to act up again..when it doesn't work it will point staright down? does anyone now why it would do this? if so how can i fix this issue? thanks for any help you can offer.

Needs a sending unit and GM has problems with them in the cars and trucks.I believe there is an access hole in this one most most newer GM cars have this hole so the tank does not have come out

This happened to mine also. Unfortunately to get the sensor for the fuel gauge, you have to buy the whole pump. However, I looked on ebay and found just the sensor, which mounts on the side of the fuel pump for about $35. That solved my problem and was not hard to do with the access door, which was under the carpet in the trunk, behind the back seat.
