I recently got a 97 Towncar. To have it registered I had frt end work done, new tires and an alignment as well as new shocks all around. That tells me steering linkage is good. I drove it 3000 miles on interestates to get it home. No real problems, steering seemed very sensitive. The other day when correcting for a wind gust I was wondering into oncoming lane then into ditch before finally getting control. The speed sensing switch on dash dose not seem to make any difference no matter where I have it. It seems to stay on slow speed sterring all the time. Any ideas?

Re: Speed sensing sterring?'s
If I would guess, either the gear box or the sensor that controlls the steering. Its located on the back of the power steering pump.

Re: Speed sensing sterring?'s
The more pwr steering pressure, the easier the steering!
There's a valve in the pump that could go bad, but I would try flushing the pwr steering system, and go with some fresh fluid. The viscosity of fluid is probably bad after 13years. Last edited by danielsatur; 11-12-2009 at 04:20 PM. |

Re: Speed sensing sterring?'s
True. This could be the problem, how ever. With mine I noticed that the gear box did the same thing that his is doing...

Re: Speed sensing sterring?'s
I am a start with the simple first kind of guy and I did not look forward to changing the steering box. I did flush the system three times so far and did notice a marked improvement right from the start, it got progressively better each time. I have been using the car to commute (80 miles return trip) to work since and am pleased to say it seems OK. Thanks
