EGR Flow Insufficient

2002 Pontiac Montana - Service Engine Soon light came on - Codes said EGR Flow Insufficient

I replaced the EGR valve. SES light is still on. I have driven van roughly 15 miles since replacing the EGR valve. How long should it take for the light to go off?

Unbolt the throttle body and check the EGR passage if it is plugged with carbon.You can see it real easily with the throttle body removed and this will set this code off.

If you still got the problem with insufficient flow to egr, clean the ports to the EGR.

So with the throttle body off I can clean the EGR passage? What would you recommend using to clean the passage?

Any tricks to taking off the throttle body?

Yep! WD40 and a Q-Tip for cleaning, but try resetting code 1st.
The trick is resetting the code without a AutoScanner.
1) Disconnect the battery
2) Touch the positive cable to grnd.
3) Connect the battery back up.
This will reset the ECU, PCU, and control modules to a known state.

Just a word of caution...

Do not EVER touch the battery postive to the battery negative!!!

The above instruction works because the battery disconnected. The purpose of touching the postive to the negative is to fully discharge the electrical circuit. It should be added that there is a slight risk of damage to the electronics by discharging them in this manner. The key is that discharging is done to the electronics without the battery connected.

However, if by some method or mistake this was done with the battery connected there would be the potential for serious injury, either from the battery exploding, the wire melting in your hands, or the wire exploding (yes, metal can vaporize with enough electrical current). Automotive batteries hold very large potential energy that has explosive power if released suddenly as would occur in a direct short between the terminals.

New symptoms:

Took to Advance Auto to have the EGR Flow Insuffient code cleared. No power to the ODBC connection port under the steering wheel. When the tech plugs the scanner into the connection port, the Information System readout starts saying "Security", but no power to the scanner.

SES light is still on after driving roughly 65 miles with 4 drive cycles.

Engine is still running a little bit rough but no where near as bad as before changing the EGR valve.

Please help.
